NOT THE PROPER MATERIAL for this application, TS did not even bother to use water-bottle-grade plastic.
Was only going to complain about the brittleness of this thing that caused me worried about breaking it when trying to open or close the lid properly. Then on the bottom I found this type of plastic being category No.6, which piqued my interest on whether or not this is BPA-free as it is not explicitly stated either on the product or this web page. I decided to find out what this is. Oh boy only after spending 3 hour researching this type of plastic I realized how much of a nerd I am.
No.6 Plastic is Polystyrene (PS), which is considered safe itself by FDA. The subcategory of the specific material used in this product is very likely High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS, Reference 1), it's chosen for its sturdiness in SINGLE-SERVE FOOD CONTAINER such as cold beverage cup and plates, etc.
I have no problem with polystyrene if it's in my beer pong cups, as they are not re-used afterward. However, for long-term use such as pill storage, there is a "Migration" issue if PS is in long-term contact with the stuff you will consume.
The molecule that will migrate to your pills/caps is called Styrene, which, according to National Institute of Health (NIH), is a POTENTIAL CARCINOGEN concluded by their study (Reference 2, just read the very first sentence).
I want to ask TS here: why would you make any long-term use container with PS that will slowly release potential carcinogens into whatever is inside?? I looked at my plastic water bottle, supplement and prescription medicine bottles, they are either No.1 or No.2 plastic, which do not have Styrene migration issue, because unlike TS, these manufactures expect the long-term contact between the container and the contained.
Of course I have to say this is a very handy container after comparing with other competing products, it’s just that the use of No.6 plastic kind of makes me feel uncomfortable knowing the longer your pills sit in there, the more tainted they are with some obscure chemical potentially carcinogenic. Doesn’t that kind of ruin the idea of taking supplement/medicine to maintain your health by somewhat compromising their beneficial aspect?
So, yes I am returning this item and no I’m not from California.
