Leap to an iPad instead
I got this for my niece, and I kind of wish I hadn't. I looked at this and all of the learning games you can get for it, saw that it comes with lots of apps to start, and I thought this will make a great gift for her. I got this in the frustration free packaging, which I highly recommend. Not only is it so easy to unpack, but if you're like me and you want to test things before you give them to someone, it's the way to go. The first thing I did was charge it, and I'm sorry to say that I don't know how long that takes. I walked off and forgot about it for a few hours. I noticed that others have been having trouble getting it to charge, so I tried charging it multiple times and never had any problems with it. That may be an issue that comes up after more time with it. The set up is very easy and parental controls work very well. You can limit time, cut off wifi and keep the kids from going into the app store so you don't get any surprises. I did everything with my finger and didn't fat-finger anything, so your kid probably won't fat-finger anything, either. Then I got to the apps, and that was a huge let down. A lot of the pre loaded apps are demos, and if the full versions on here are worth $195, they're way overpriced. This thing is an endless downward spiral. First you have to buy the tablet, then you have to buy endless apps. By the time you're done, you could have bought an iPad and invested some time in tight parental controls and gotten the same thing, along with a tablet you could have used yourself. There isn't one decent learning app that comes with this thing that can grow along with the child. They put dud apps on here and loaded it with teasers for the real content. There ought to be at least one app on here to start. You have to spend more money on it. The other problem I had when using it is that it seemed to be a slow reacting to me when I was using an app. It's frustrating for me as an adult; I can't imagine what it's going to be like for a four year old to get their own device, knowing that mom and dad's phones go fast, then they get their own and it goes at the speed of smell. She's going to throw this down and demand my phone, and my phone isn't going to have the expensive educational apps on it. So I don't really recommend this because it's slow to react and you have to buy a lot of extra apps for it. Plus I've seen a lot of complaints about trouble charging it. I think I would skip this and get regular tablet instead.
