Upon opening the package, the sleep mask looked well designed and at first I was very impressed with the quality and packaging. With any clothing or fabric item, I will wash it (following product instructions) before using it. When I handwashed the sleep mask in cold water with a drop of dish soap, an overpowering smell came from the fabric, likely from whatever material is under the silk cover. I thought it was a chemical smell. Could be dye or it could be something else. That is a dealbreaker for me, so I am returning the item. I can't imagine having it close to my nose, since I felt overpowered by the smell from arm's length away. I will search for an all-organic sleep mask.
