★★☆☆☆
Oddly inaccurate
Sorry, I just couldn't finish this book. It seemed pretty inaccurate when I began it, and then the mention of totem poles by the main character kind of gave me pause (totem poles having nothing to do with the Navajo). Then they had "traditional" Navajo freely and frequently using the name of a dead character. So I checked other reviews, and apparently the author didn't do even minimal research for this book. Which just seems incredibly disrespectful, since the main characters are all Navajo and it's set on a reservation. I can't understand why the author just didn't take a day or two to find out about the people she was writing about. Oh, and there are people who just live in cars parked in a certain area. In the desert. And none of them die of dehydration or over-heating. In fact, I read a ways in and didn't see any mention of the problem of water, especially untainted, pure water, at all. Which seems really odd for a story set inside a Navajo reservation. I don't understand how you can know absolutely nothing about a culture or place, but then make assumptions about how the people in it think and live.
