★★☆☆☆
Real mixed bag
This is a generally good story ruined by several very serious flaws. * The mentor figure is supposed to be super deadly, super experienced in fighting and highly aware of his weaknesses, yet he dies from an incredibly obvious ploy very easily * One of the initial sub-plots involves the attempted rape of the heir to one of the most powerful noble families in the kingdom. The perp is caught in the act by the hero AND several important/sympathetic/politically powerful mage leaders. Yet the charges are dismissed with a "no paperwork was filed" ploy that any of those individual can and did refute easily. Yet nobody cared or acted as if there would be consequences. * Many individuals seem to have some kind of absolute loyalty for no particular reason. * Insults and threats seem common in the interaction of public figures. People take these personally in the scene, but no lasting relationship issues and certainly no political costs. * Many laws are broken, yet the hero feels that everybody will respect and honor a law that had never been used in six thousand years and that only a handful of people even knew existed - yet would give him enormous political power. * Wizards/mages are glass cannons and yet nobody seems to act that way - even though the good guys get taken down this way several times. Magic takes some time to cast, but they do not even use bodyguards. Nobody has defenses of any kind.
