I really want to like the 38oz stainless steel water bottle. My first impression is 5 star easy. However my problem with it came after in my excitement, I had thrown away the packaging and washed it removing any stickers on it. It was when I started drying the bottle that I came across a major flaw in the product, that could lead to severe health issues. There is a rather prominent seam on the inside of the bottle where the top meets the side walls of the bottle possibly where it was welded at or whatever method is used in the manufacturing of the product, and normally this would not be an issue as many metal products that are manufactured have these seams. But most manufacturers clean up the welds so that it doesn't rust and can be cleaned with ease so as to not affect the health of the consumer. That is not the case for the product I received. In the process of washing the product and drying it I at first didn't realize how bad it was but after continuously trying to clean the seam and getting dark grey/black residue on the towels and paper towels I was using to dry with, I began noticing TIMY SLIVERS OF WHAT LOOKED LIKE DISCOLORED METAL coming out on the towels I was using. At this point I stopped cleaning the bottle and grabbed a dental mirror I had, and looked inside at the seam and what I found was shocking. Not only were what looked like very small weld spots visible there were other section of the seam where the metal was discoled clearly not polished or sanded, and a couple spots had even what looked like rust begining on them. Now I had ordered two bottles at the same time one came a day early and this is the one I'm wrighting my review on. And since in my initial excitement of getting what first appeared to be an amazing product, I had already thrown away the box, packaging, and removed the stickers from the bottle I'm sure I can no longer return the bottle. I'm hoping the second bottle I am supposed to get the next day dose not have such a potentially dangerous defect but as of the righting of this review my hopes are not high. If the defect is present in the second bottle I will be returning it immediately, and will update this review accordingly. But for not I can only express how utterly disappointed I am with the stainless steel Nalgene 38oz water bottle. As if not for that one major flaw that could lead to severe health issues I would have rated it as 5 stars. The seam flaw is something that can most likely be fixed with some sand paper and some time sitting and sanding the seam. However that is not something that the customer should ever have to do on what is supposed to be a finished product. To the Nalgene company I hope you find what has caused your product to have such a big flaw and are able to fix it. As I know your other plastic water bottles are absolutely fantastic, but the 38oz stainless steel ones need their quality control reevaluated to correct this major flaw.
