Tail gets pinned in the door. Mouse removed part of its tail; blood and suffering
I bought a set of CaptSure mouse traps (size: Small) because I need to solve a mouse problem in my kitchen. I wanted an alternative to inhumane glue/snap traps. However, my actions in purchasing and using these traps have also resulted in suffering. I regret that I was misled by the manufacturers claims that this was a humane product.
The title for the product on Amazon starts with "CaptSure Original Humane Mouse Traps", and the description states "100% HUMANE - Our Catch and Release method causes no kill, no pain and is cruelty free. We are endorsed by humane societies and animal rights organizations in the U.S. and worldwide. Captsure is Ideal for animal lovers."
This product does not live up to its claims. Both mice it's trapped have gotten their tails pinned in the door. The first mouse was caught very quickly, and when I heard the commotion, I was able to quickly push the door in so it could free its tail. The mouse was moving very quickly and the video was blurry, so I assumed it was a fluke. I set the trap again last night. Unfortunately, I was asleep during the second catch. The terrified second mouse, its tail pinched in the door for over an hour, removed its own tail in order to free itself. There was blood all over the bottom of the trap, and the mouse lost a 1 inch portion of its tail. I put together a video showing the horrible ordeal of the second mouse and serves as proof of my claim that this trap is cruel and inhumane. Unfortunately, Amazon does not allow linking to external videos. Search Youtube for "CaptSure Cruelty". I put the video thumbnail in my review. Let me know in the comments if it's hard to find.
The trap activated as designed. The mouse walked up the fulcrum, and then triggered. However, its tail was still well outside the trap. This trap is simply way too short; the fulcrum needs to be at least 2-3 inches further in. If the manufacturer truly wants to sell a humane trap, it will remove this product from the market immediately while it corrects the problem. They sell a larger trap made for rats, but it is only around 1.25" inches longer.
Note that there are many similar products by other manufacturers. I am not sure which one was the original, but I assume it was the one by Harris.
