★★☆☆☆
too much glitz
I wanted to know how a masonry heater works and how to build one. I got frustrated with this book. It has loads of beautiful pictures-- I mean, Better Homes and Garden types, upscale gorgeous masonry heaters. No dirt. people are perfectly posed, wood is stacked neatly, no one working. I've been heating with wood for 40 years and I know most of us who heat with wood work at it. The visuals in this book suggest a different, upper class dream world. Masonry heaters should be available for the poor and working class. We're the ones who will eventually save the planet-- not the rich. Lack of information. The author uses many pages to describe very little. His premise seems rooted in the belief that you need to be a "professional" to build a masonry heater. I disagree. There are some diagrams of the inner workings of the stove but I didn't get enough to understand them. If you want to learn how a masonry stove works and how to build one google missouri masonry stove. you can download a pdf document for free. This book will end up under my coffee table while the Missouri stove papers will land in my shop.
