I am a die hard NR fan. I genuinely enjoy her books but her last three standalone novels have been lacking. The best thing I can say about Nightwork is that it’s better than her last two. Putting aside the recycled plot ( Honest Illusions and The Reef) NR seems to have completely forgotten that what makes her great is how she develops the romantic story between the two characters. ***Spoilers*** Nightworks has the main character Booth fall in love with Miranda at first sight around 130 pages in. Their ‘love’ story develops over less than 20 pages and one weekend and then Booth has to leave suddenly shattering Miranda’s heart. They then reunite some 15 years later but Miranda hasn’t forgiven Booth and Booth is still in love with Miranda….the only problem is, from a reader’s perspective, no real connection was ever really formed between the two in the first place. Where has Nora Roberts gone? The writer who used to write these amazing suspenseful romance novels that were worth preordering? I’m giving this two stars because, while not her best, it is nowhere near as bad as her standalone Hideaway. If you’re looking for a good NR book, I highly recommend The Search, The Obsession, The Liar…pretty much anything other than her last three.
