For the first time, a disappointing entry in the MCU. Brie Larson spends the whole bloody film walking around with her fists clenched, and delivers a completely unmemorable performance that has more than a few cringe-worthy moments. With a better lead actress, this could've been a great movie. As it was, Ms Larson was simply not up to the task, delivering a lacklustre performance as an entirely forgettable heroine. The rest of the cast does a good job, but with a weak lead the movie simply falls short of what it should have been. Also, the decision to make this a "feminist" movie was a bad one that brought on a number of terrible, awkward lines in the film that were obviously added solely to point out how "empowered" Captain Marvel was. To paraphrase Tywin Lannister: Anyone who needs to constantly remind others how powerful they are is not powerful in the least. Near the end of the movie there is a scene where the protagonist informs her antagonist that she has nothing to prove to him. Perhaps; however that statement rings hollow in light of the fact that her opponent is correct, and that while Captain Marvel has managed to access her full powers and is now easily able to overpower her foe through brute force, doing so is effectively a crutch to save her from her own impetuosity. Which is curious because every other MCU hero to date has been forced to fight either without their powers or against an obviously stronger foe in order to find their true strength (Iron Man defeated Aldrich Killian without his armor; Thor couldn't defeat Hela and had to allow Surtur to destroy Asgard in order to stop her; Black Panther was forced to fight without powers and lost, but later won the rematch with equal power levels...the list goes on...), while somehow Captain Marvel finds her "true strength" only when she's absurdly overpowered compared with her foes. I could go on, but at the end of the day this movie fails for two reasons: poor choice of lead actress, and the studio tried too hard to make this movie politically correct. A better actress could have masked weaknesses in the story, or a better story might have been easier for Ms Larson to convincingly depict. Unfortunately neither was the case, resulting in a movie that is disappointing at best.
