Remanufactured Ink - 2 out of 3 failure rate - and it may or may not be recognized by Epson Artisan 835.
I purchased 3 of these inks for the office in September 2015 believing them to be the genuine product (they are Epson plastic cartridges sealed in plastic wrap and wrapped in the traditional Epson box). We always buy ahead for the office so if there are sudden demands we have stock to use. The first ink was used in October and worked okay.
On the day I was leaving for the holidays in December that ink was drained and I loaded the second ink. It printed 2 pages and then the printer (an Epson Artisan 835) would not recognize the cartridge. I then tried the third ink cartridge and the printer would not recognize it at all. In desperation I called Epson. After a long hold time I spoke with their tech support who walked me through some troubleshooting and then said if both cartridges were genuine Epson product then the printer was broken (Epson programs its printers to print XXX number of pages and then to stop working completely so there are not always signs of anything amiss prior to final failure). As I believed the ink to be genuine Epson cartridges I thought that was the end of the printer.
When I returned from the holiday I decided to try purchasing ink from a store before completely abandoning the Epson. I slotted the new ink into the printer and it has worked beautifully since then.
I understand the need for re-manufactured inks and the reason they exist. But they need to be marked accordingly by the seller (in this case Ink Shopi). We already knew from previous experience that the re-manufactured cartridges did not work with this particular printer and that they can cause long-term problems so we avoid them (and they have always been clearly marked as remanufactured). I had deliberately sought out 'genuine' ink so that this exact scenario did not occur.
Reading the reviews I noted one of the other reviewers states the genuine cartridges have EPSON written on the chip and indeed they do. I am attaching a photo of one of the Ink Shopi cartridges next to a genuine Epson cartridge so you can see the difference. I wish the Epson Tech Support had thought to mention that! I plan to check any future ink purchases for that Epson identifier.
I called Amazon customer service who were, as I have always found, exemplary in their handling of my complaint.
