Amazon Store Card... What a Joke.
Let me first start by saying that I understand this isn't run by Amazon, but by a 3rd party bank. That said, there is a dual branded relationship here and all of the bad experiences I see below and mine will reflect on Amazon. As such, Amazon may want to reconsider who they're doing business with and who they let use their name.
My wife and I applied for this card. We do so much shopping on Amazon that the 5% back seemed like a good idea and the 12 months at 0% seemed like a no brainer for our $1,500 backpacking gear purchase we were getting ready to order. While we have the cash to buy it up front, I'd rather put it on this card, get a $20 off up front promotion, 5% credit on the statement and pay it off over the course of 6 months (no need to stretch it any further). I always prefer to use other people's money when it's 0% and just make sure that I have cash in reserves to pay it off in full if needed.
Like a smart consumer, I read all 48 pages of the legaleese to see what the definition of a "Qualified purchase" is (i.e. what I would get 5% back on). Predicably, there was no definition (i.e. anything sold on amazon.com or anything sold by Amazon LLC, anything that's Prime eligable, etc). I then proceeded to contacted Amazon to see what the definition of "Qualified purchase" is, both chat representatives simply gave me a contact number for the bank. I called the bank 3 times until I got someone who's accent wasn't so thick that I couldn't understand them and then was provided with no clear information. He said that the system determines what qualifies and what doesn't and he there was no way for him to tell me. I then call amazon hoping that a phone rep would be more help and after 20 minutes of holding, I get the same response. After calling the bank one more time I'm told that anything sold by Amazon LLC qualifies (FINALLY!!!!!!!)
At this time we decided to apply for the card. The online application process was easy, but useless as it said that they required additional information to proceed and provided a phone number and a reference number. I call the number, give them the info and then I'm told that it's going to review and I should receive an answer in the next 7-10 business days... I got pre-approved for a mortgage of up to $500,000 in 15 minutes, approved on my Costco AMEX in 3 minutes, but this will take 7-10 days?!
I called back in to check on the process and I'm told that it's declined. This is kind of perplexing to me as my wife and I make a combined income of just under $75k/year, have 0 standing debt (no mortgage, no car loans, no student loans, etc), only our AMEX which is paid off monthly, have a credit score of 795-815 respectively (between the 3 unions) and have perfect credit history (i.e. not a single late payment on any account, ever)... If we don't qualify... who does? At this point, I assume it has something to do with our recent move (i.e. addresses not matching, etc) and they suspect it may be an attempted fraud, or something along those lines. I ask why it was declined in an attempt to clear this all up and I'm told that he can't access that information, but I should receive it in the mail in the next 30-90 days. I had an issue with my AMEX being compromised on our trip to Mexico in June. When I dealt with AMEX, they were prompt, courteous, easy to understand (i.e. an american call center) and most of all, had all the information they needed at their finger tips.
I suspect if you have this card, it's great as long as NOTHING goes wrong, but the first time you need their assistance for a billing inquiry, change of address, dispute a charge, etc. Good luck.
