★★☆☆☆
very dissapointed
**UPDATE 02/16/20**
The timeout period is extremely ANNOYING. Definitely needs 1 and 3-minute options.
For example, if you set the timeout to the minimum (5 minutes) and you walk into the pantry the lights will turn on automatically as expected, you grab what you need, then leave and manually turn off the switch. If you walk back in less than 5 minutes later, the lights WON'T turn on because the sensor is still within the 5 minutes timeout of the original motion event. With 15 and 30-minute timeouts this would be much worse and very irritating. Clearly the sensor is dumb; it just does not know when the linked switch was manually overridden in order to reset the sensor timeout. Will return these and go back to the Smartthings motion sensors which are fully customizable and work with Caseta switches via the Smartthings Hub.
Original review:
One important thing: these are NOT smart sensors, they only detect motion and activate a switch or group of switches. Currently you CANNOT create specific automations based on time of day, other sensors' status, phone/person location, etc. at least not with the current Lutron App. You cannot even change the sensors setting via the App. It has actual buttons on the back to do that and has very limited options.
These sensors are expensive for what they are and do but they seem well designed from an engineering standpoint , even though they look dated just like repurposed 10+ year old Lutron Maestro/RadioRA sensors from what I can see. They decided to use the same case and probably same internals, different firmware for sure. It is huge for a sensor in the year 2020. Setup was easy with the app. Partially solves the problem of walk-in closets and pantry with external switch. Just placed the sensors inside and work as expected detecting motion very quick. One annoying CON I see is the preset timeouts are too long: 5, 15 and 30 minutes. Needs 1 & 3-minute timeouts, which would more practical for everyday use like the Lutron Maestro sensors.
The battery life of 10 years sounds a bit of a stretch...maybe if it only registers one or few events a day but thats to be seen.
As I said before, the app is not smart enough to add conditions to the automations for example you cannot program it to turn on and dim down the lights at night and go back to full brightness during the day. Let alone interact with other type of sensors, switches status, etc. Lutron got very lazy and failed here; in this day and age when home automation is all the rage, they cannot put out this old sensor with a dumb App system. This would have been a hit 20 years ago definitely not today. Smartthings can do a lot more when linked with Caseta switches using any decent $25 Zigbee or Z-wave motion sensor. The only advantage of using native Caseta sensors is the almost zero lag time. Another CON is that it is considered a "device" -as expected- so if you have many Lutron devices (i'm already reaching the device number limit between dimmers, switches, shades) beware of this.
