★★☆☆☆
uncertain
I have received part of an order of a combination of rough and tumbled stones from crystal allies/amazon. The rough stones are black tourmaline, rose quartz and amethyst the polished ones are amethyst and fluoride. These all arrived at once. They all have the same odd chemical smell to them. It does not smell like incense, perfume, air freshener or cleaning product. The black tourmaline is full of black particles and splinters. The black tourmaline still smells after I washed and gently scrubbed it to try to remove the odor and the particles. A couple of the pieces of the black tourmaline contain what appears to be quartz on one end. At least 4 or 5 of them seem to be no more than a thin outer layer of black over a dull red color that to me resembles aged fireplace brick. They also look nothing like the 7 other smaller pieces of black tourmaline I have from two different sources. Could these be synthetic? I hope not. I will report back after I have some geologist look at them. In the mean time, I would welcome any light others can shed on my uncertainty.
August 29, 2013 Two geologists looked at the pound of rough black tourmaline, laughed and stated that it is not black tourmaline it is coal. I am not surprised. I wonder what amazon will suggest when I call them. They are usually great with mix ups. I have never had anything this extreme occur with an Amazon product. Since I can't change the rating to zero stars I may just leave it at 2 for now.
