The 4G model depends on Wi-Fi to stream movies! The TTS text-to-speech feature no longer supports newspapers/ blogs!
WARNING: Multiple issues exist versus prior Kindle models, including how 4G use is configured. My older Kindle DX has 3G service, and had NO Wi-Fi capability. The new Kindle Fire HD depends on and requires Wi-Fi usage alongside 4G. So if your Wi-Fi is poor, like mine, you are SOL even with 4G. WARNING: The TTS function now works only with books. Not newspapers or blogs!
And the $49 offer for AT&T 4G service advertised, depends upon which of the two billing arrangements you make on Kindle setup. AT&T is going to bill me $216/year instead, and it is NOT clearly indicated before you make the choice.
Even worse, the AT&T 4G service is of limited function. !!! This afternoon I found out that in order to watch a movie, or even download a magazine, I had to reconnect my "Wi Fi" connection, and use that instead of the AT&T 4G. So I do not understand what the premium of the 4G service is good for.
After reconnecting the Wi Fi, the one movie I tried to watch kept stopping. Why? Because my Wi Fi connection is not strong, and the Kindle was "hunting for Wi-Fi signal" which was the purpose I intended in paying more for the 4G service!.
Speaking of blogs . . .THERE ARE NO BLOGS! I subscribe to The Huffington Post and New York Times Latest News "blogs", which provide updates throughout the day. The Kindle Fire HD does not support these.
The other major complaint I have is about the TTS "Text to Speech" feature. Amazon and other forum reps represented that the TTS feature would be installed on the Fire HD models, subject to publisher support, but that is NOT completely true. The TTS feature was an important function to me, as I have used my older Kindle DX model. On the Kindle DX, the TTS works with most books, AND with newspaper/blog downloads as well. I have discovered that with the Fire HD TTS does NOT work with any newspaper/blogs --- only with books. So not a publisher decision. A design difference.
Why was that important to me as a loyal Kindle customer?? Because like many, I have a long commute, and I was using the Kindle DX with TTS to read me the headlines and in depth stories from the New York Times, or Washington Post, or other periodicals, during my commute. Along with the books. The loss of the TTS feature on periodicals was NOT disclosed in the advertising on the Kindle Fire. For those of us that used TTS on prior models, reading that the new model supported TTS as well, it certainly implied that the feature was not being diminished ---- ie by the loss of all newspaper and blog support. Indeed, that is why I bought the 4G version, because that was a great feature of my 3G equipped Kindle DX.
Back to my Kindle DX. Who needs to see fancy book covers in color instead? They have the right to change features. But the loss of functionality is a big step back and NOT YET PROPERLY DISCLOSED.
