★★☆☆☆
The best episodes are completely censored.
Over the years, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have mocked Catholicism, Mormonism and Scientology. They would later go on to have a Smash Broadway hit with their musical, The Book of Mormon. They have also routinely depicted Jesus Christ as a neurotic savior throughout the programs run, and repeatedly presented Moses of some kind of spinning top or computer holograph; I could never tell which. With Scientology depicted it as a scam created by L. Ron Hubbard to make money and dared the church to sue them. They depicted pedophilia as a standard Catholic practice with the Church secretly condoning sex with boys. But one thing they never did was mock Islam. But with episodes titled 200 and 201, they attempted to mock the self censorship of non-Muslims. In 2005 Islamists threatened violence against a Danish newspaper and Danes in general for depicting the Muslim prophet in a series of cartoons. In 2007 when Swedish artist Lars Vilks drew Mohammed. In 2010, Parker and Stone wrote a two part episode ridiculing self censorship under the threat of violence. The episode depicted Mohammed along with Jesus Christ, Joseph Smith, Buddha, Krishna and Seaman. But when the episodes aired Parker and Stone's work was censored. A black box with the word "censored" was imposed over each depiction of Mohammed and on 201, the actual name Mohammed was beeped out. And at the end of the episode Kyle's "I learned something today" speech was beeped out entirely, as well as speeches by Jesus and Santa. These speeches didn't even mention the Islamic prophet's name but ridiculed those who use violence to prevent others from drawing or depicting the prophet. And neither of these episodes has been aired after their original airing. So I bought Season 14 so I could see what I missed. When I learned that the everything censored when the show was broadcast 6 years ago was censored on the DVDs as well. At this point I felt cheated. Then I decided to play 201 again with the audio commentary turned on. And even Treay Parker and Matt Stone's commentary was beeped out. They were censored from being allowed to talk about censorship. It's time for Comedy Central to grow some balls and stop cowardly censoring this material.
