Propaganda film for routine coronary artery calcium scanning
At first blush I thought this medical documentary film would be informative and insightful about CAD and warning signs the public should watch out for. However, it quickly became apparent it was instead a blatant propaganda film in strong support of widespread coronary artery calcium scanning. My father was a Columbia P&S and LAC-USC trained cardiologist, and he found these tests as a waste of time and money. Calcium deposits near coronary arteries are not evidence of coronary narrowing/blockage. Also, the absence of calcium deposits on or near coronary arteries is not evidence of the absence of CAD & blockages. Relatively inexpensive and non invasive stress EKG treadmill testing and stress coronary echo for those that need echo are much more definitive and diagnostic of CAD, based on 40+ years of my father's medical practice. Of course coronary angiograms are still the gold standard for quantifying, locating and definitively confirming the diagnosis of coronary artery disease aka CAD. This film was dishonest propaganda to sway lay public opinion in favor of widespread routine coronary artery calcium scanning and I found it to be a turn off. My 2 cents. Finis
