Tone deaf and ignorant
This book was very clearly rushed, it's all over the place, contradictory from page to page and paragraph to paragraph. Even Andy says he didn't have the time to write the book but did it anyway. The proofreader should be fired. The irony of the book is Andy is writing about the culture at his own church but projecting it to the rest of the Christian community as a whole. Andy's premise is that the church shouldn't take cultural or political positions and that the early Christians weren't. This premise is completely false. Andy references Paul a lot to try to make his points claiming that Paul was a "spy" and blended in, but yet we all know Paul was routinely drummed out of towns, beaten and arrested. Paul was the counterculture and recruited others to be part of the counterculture following Christ. Remember being called a Christian was considered an insult at the time. Andy mentions Jesus didn't come to win, but to lose. Well, that's not true either. Jesus won because he not only beat death, but beat Caesar and the Romans by showing He was greater than they were. That is absolutely a form of winning. To tie this to culture today, we have a portion of the country that claim to be Christians and are protesting for abortion. The church absolutely should be taking a stand against something like that. Andy doesn't think the church should. That they should go a long to get a long and basically be anemic to anything political or cultural. Unfortunately, that is what assists in the death of the church. Many in the church will like this book because it paints the fluffy feel good image of Christianity Andy likes to perpetuates being that his dad Charles is a more fire and brimstone preacher. Unfortunately the feel good version of Christianity ignores the reality and hardship being a Christian really is. Being a Christian isn't supposed to be easy. As someone who has attended Andy's church first hand a few times out of curiosity, it's not very biblically centered, God is working somewhere in that church, but this is another attempt of Andy's to recreate his version of Christianity. Andy will only reference the Bible every now and again, but he will always say "I did.., or I said....." It's all about Andy. He is nothing more than a Joel Osteen junior oozing with pride, the number one thing Christians are supposed to not be, prideful. There are much better biblically based books out there, this is not one of them. Please go elsewhere. A friend asked me how to describe the book and I told him the book is written from the perspective of Andy analyzing the state of the church without acknowledging that he is part of the reason the state of the church is the way it is. Young people leaving the church because they feel the church doesn't believe what it's teaching it's congregation is a failure of the church leadership for not directing the church in the right direction. Andy calls this out but is a direct cause for that issue. That's why I called this book tone deaf.
