Terrible message, do not buy
This book is the antithesis to the ant and the grasshopper story. While the other mice work and prepare for winter, Frederick lays around, seemingly asleep, and “gathers words, sunlight, and colors” for winter. In the end when the mice run out of food, Frederick literally emanates light and colors and recites poetry, thereby brightening the dark, gloomy winter for his family. I have no problem with liberal arts, or a life that doesn't add “material value” as some of the reviews here have said. But to be a poet or an artist takes hard work. For a small child (the intended audience), the only message they'll receive from this is that you can lay around and do nothing and still provide value later. This book is garbage, don't buy it for your kids.
