TruNiagen sent me into a 72+ hour nightmare of severe chest pain and arrhythmia.
I've been on a strict paleo diet for about 2 years, and just recently started incorporating a little bit more Sirtuin-rich plant based foods on advice from Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. David Sinclair. As a health nut, but not someone who takes or trusts supplements often, NMN and NR were on my radar for quite some time. Based on bold claims from the company that not a single adverse event had been reported ever in the products' history (a phony claim that I should have recognized as too good to be true) I eventually felt into the trap of the company's smooth marketing.
The first day the shipment arrived, I took a single tablet as directed. I felt zero effect. The second day I took a single tablet, again, exactly as directed. About an hour or two later I started experiencing stabbing chest pain radiating to my back along with a racing heartbeat. Obviously I immediately discontinued the medication then and there.
The severe chest pain came and went along with tachycardic arrhythmia continued for 72 hours nonstop. My heart felt like it was fluttering, and I felt "gross" all over and intolerant to exercise. Laying down in bed seemed to help. I was on the verge of calling an ambulance the entire time but settled on getting ahold of a cardiologist (a board certified heart specialist M.D.) instead. He recommended an EKG and enzyme test. My heart required the use of prescription beta blockers just to get under control. I got into my Family Practice MD where they took my blood pressure, which was hypertensive even after massive doses of betablockers. I only got mild relief after strong painkillers and blood thinning modalities. I had taken no coffee for about a week, and don't use any illegal drugs- which was evidenced by the results of a urinalysis my doctor gave me.
A Google search quickly revealed an article from 2008 by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology associating NAD+ with atrial fibrillation, as well as exposing a myriad of similar chest pain/dizziness/palpitations consumer complaints shared both here on Amazon and elsewhere on a prominent social media site. None of these adverse events were reported by the company, in fact the opposite. So here's a solid Life Pro Tip: don't take supplements that are 40-50 times the RDA and expect there not to be side effects.
At this point I'm on bedrest, still with some symptoms, and waiting to get in to see another Cardiologist now for a full workup... but all of my doctors are unfamiliar with this supplement and that seems to be complicating matters. I sent an email to the company as well as the FDA reporting the adverse event. I myself am clearly still under treatment and not remotely out of the woods yet. This was a terrifying experience for me, and I'm in fear of what more extensive test results may reveal. I desperately want to make sure this never happens to anyone else ever again. The only thing in my power to do about that is share an honest account of what happened to me- and I will never take another supplement ever again.
