Nitrogen cycle never starts and fish will die.
Bought my tank in April with high hopes. Little did I know what is provided in the kit is not adequate to actually keep a betta alive. Living in the Pacific Northwest were temps are cool, I had to get a heater to increase the water temp to something resembling a livable condition for my betta. Then I had to buy additional accessories for the tank because betta require somewhere to hide in order to feel relaxed and be healthy.
I would be happy to accept all that but the thing that really frustrates me is that the nitrogen cycle has yet to establish in my tank. My first fish died after two weeks so I bought a water testing kit and found the ammonia levels to be 8 ppm which is far too high for a betta to remain healthy. It also showed the nitrite levels (the second phase of the nitrogen cycle) were still 0 ppm meaning no biological filter was being established. I cleaned the tank, set it up according to directions again (had to buy a new bottle of Zym Bac) and I am two weeks in with my new fish and the same cycle is repeating. High ammonia, no nitrites or nitrates.
I wouldn't recommend this tank. I had high hopes but now I think I wasted a lot of money trying to get something to work that set me up for failure. Maybe there's a solution, if so, I haven't found it. I included a picture right after setup with my first fish. RIP, Chompers.
