NOT for Pros or Artists; BLATANT COPY OF AVIARY
[UPDATE:] After reading other reviews that this is not just using the AVIARY engine, but just a REPACKAGING of Aviary, I checked out the claims and found the claims are TRUE! Nor, as others have pointed out, does this app have some of the capabilities of the screenshots; I apologize for missing that in my review.
PROS:
+ Simple, nice tools
+ Capable "quick and dirty" editor
CONS:
- BLATANT COPY OF >FREE< "AVIARY" APP!
- NO Undo
- NO Layers
- NOT FOR PROFESSIONALS
[ORIGINAL REVIEW]
This is a nice demonstration application which shows off the underlying engine well, and presents some excellent User Interface capabilities. An example of which is the "thumbwheel" scroll wheel at the bottom which does a nice simulation of a mechanical wheel, and is an intuitive control. The options at the bottom are, for the most part, understandable as to what each function/tool does. There are some useful tools, and this can be a quick and dirty editor that will yield acceptable results for some circumstances as well as fun artistic playfulness.
Beyond getting to choose whether you want to use a photo or a blank canvas when the app starts, there are no menus or options other than the tool buttons at the bottom. Note, by the way, that the app starts up rotating into Portrait (why is a mystery). Once inside the app, however, you can rotate back to landscape. The tools are fairly self-explanatory, and you can play with the settings without applying them first. This is good, but also means that if you forget to apply the tool or you apply something by accident, you are not going to be happy that there's no undo or layers.
But, as mentioned, this seems more like a demo app for the Aviary engine that "powers" this app. And this is a little concerning because the Aviary SDK that runs this app is free for adding into this type of application but relies on IN-APP PURCHASING for generating revenue. I cannot say whether Draw Infinity would ever add IAP, but it is worth mentioning that this might be an income model that the developer chooses, or is forced, into making.
The different features work well, and are simple to use. But scrolling and zooming is not easy, since you have to touch the magnifying glass icon to do that while you're in a tool, and only a few tools allow pinching and zooming. Also, you have to "Apply" the tool once you're satisfied with the outcome.
BUT it is missing the most basic of professional tools: NO "undo" and NO "layers". Sorry, you also cannot export to different file types. To good news, at least, is that it is a non-destructive editor, saving a copy of the image instead of overwriting the original image.
This is fun little editing software for the novice, and at 99-cents (but not more) it is a pretty great little editor that will provide a lot of fun for people. It just isn't for serious artists or professionals.
