The Girl from Krakow
I downloaded this book today as part of the Kindle First program offered to Prime members. I love historical fiction so I immediately downloaded this book and began to read it.
The story follows a woman named Rita. She is very unique in her attitude towards religion, philosophy, and politics, all of which played a big role in the lives of Europeans during the thirties and forties (the time period in which this novel takes place). Unfortunately, I didn't like Rita's character, particularly in regards to her morality. She has an affair with a man, and has sex with him the very first night they meet. Later on, she goes for a gynelogical exam (trying to figure out why her and her husband can't conceive) and lo and behold the gynecologist is none other than the man she had an affair with all those months ago. Without so much as as a "how do you do?" she yanks her panties down and eagerly screws him right there in the exam room. Yeah, nice girl. I admit that yes, the book's description made it clear that she has an affair, so I was forewarned, but I wasn't expecting her to be so easy and for the sex scenes to be so tasteless.
Besides the disappointing main character, the rest of the story is bogged down with many, many political details. I found the politics to be overwhelming, and while certainly not a historian, I can keep up with the average American and any conversation that might revolve around Germany and WWII. But this book was way over my head. The author referenced dozens of political groups, organizations, and leaders that I knew little to nothing about, and yet the author presented the information as if it is all common knowledge.
Hence, I was unable to make it past the first five or six chapters. I was bored to tears, and the sex scene in the gynecologist office was the final straw for me.
I know that most customers want a review from a person that has read the entire book, but I cannot bring myself to read the remaining four hundred or so pages of this novel, and I think it likely that many customers will share the same opinion about this story. Thus, I'm hoping that even though I haven't finished the book, that some customers will still see the value of my review, read it, and realize that this book may not be for them. Hopefully this will save some people from wasting their time reading the first several chapters, only to be disappointed and not finish the book like I did. My recommendation is to pick a different book from this month's Kindle First.
However, despite my extreme disappointment in this novel, I can easily see how many people would absolutely love this book. While it was not my personal taste, individuals that enjoy reading about WWII will probably thoroughly enjoy this book. The author clearly spent a great deal of time researching this book, and many readers will appreciate that.
Bottom line: probably not a book the average reader will enjoy, but this book will definitely please a certain kind of audience.
