Not Ready For Sale
I received the Phantom 2 Vision+ a few weeks ago. My first two flights were in an open field and everything worked great and as advertised. I then took it to the beach, and again, other than great difficulty in seeing the iPhone screen, the drone performed well. On two occasions, including the at the beach, I used the "Failsafe" mode and the drone returned home precisely and safely. I tried to fly it this past weekend and after rising about 8 feet, the drone took off on its own and crashed into a structure. Although I was less than 30 feet away, I had no control even though I calibrated the compass and was receiving 6 satellites. The gimbal was bent and continued hopelessly to try to control the camera. I straightened the gimbal, but it works only intermittently. I attempted another low level flight and again the vehicle took off out of control and crashed into the ground. No spare parts for replacing the gimbal are available. With the carrying case and extra batteries, I have about $1700 in unusable junk! When it works, it is a marvel, but unfortunately the engineering is poor and it is not ready for regular use IMHO.
Since I wrote the above review, I have been trying to speak to DJI on getting the drone repaired. I have made numerous calls, sent emails, and tried to communicate through their trouble shooting service. NOT ONE SINGLE RESPONSE from Customer Service or anybody associated with DJI. I cannot get warranty service or even buy the components so that I can use the vehicle. There are alternatives and they have to be better than this company.
Update: After many attempts at contacting DJI through every channel available, I finally received a reply with a RMA. It was stated that repair times were running 4 weeks. They signed for receipt of my Phantom on July 3. On July 27 they informed me that the drone was put in the repair queue and that it would be 4 weeks before it would be repaired. From my experience and that of many, many others, it is clear that DJI cannot provide customer service. Fortunately there are many other manufacturers which are offering strong competitive products at lower prices. It will be interesting to see if DJI will be able to avoid the fate of so many other companies that were destroyed by more success that it could handle.
