★☆☆☆☆
Simple awful
Well, this book is easy to summarize.
You have about 100 pages of zombie apocalypse clumsily shoehorned into content regurgitated from previous books.
Once again we see..
Anita being accused of devil worship
The cops hating Anita for her active love life and how SUPER AWESOME she is.
Random hatred from other women
Someone who hates her spontaneously switching to worshiping her because she's SUPER AWESOME
Anita repeatedly commenting on how she's plain.
Sex, that could've been lifted straight from the past books
Upset bodyguards
More sex, also recycled
Public displays of affection in the middle of a case, along with the usual rundown of how the cops disliked it
Anita being reminded, again, that she needs to eat. You'd think she'd have learned that after nearly killing Damien and Nathaniel.
Anita's mother issues
Relationship issues
Anita gains yet another strain of lycanthropy. Gotta catch 'em all!
Random homophobia from JC's vampire crew
The entire 'Visit your dying father whom you've been alienated from for years' is recycled from Blood Noir, complete with references to how Micah's grandfather hated his son for being small.
Big Manly Men
Whats new?
The plot development with Asher in Kiss the Dead is retconed. He gets to come home and the same bipolar whiny emo jerk he's been for the past 14 books.
Theres going to be a polyamorous wedding. Yay.
And whats just bad?
In a series this long, just having the characters info dump that Morte d'amour was supposedly killed is just.. its just bad writing. He's a major character in previous books and in this book and he gets 0 setup, 0 love. She could have swapped in any vampire or beasty and the book would've read exactly the same. If you're going to have the main villain of a book be a cardboard cutout, at least have the decency to use a new one rather than just anticlimax all over an established and interesting bad guy's face.
In short: You can pretty much get the entirety of this book by watching a subpar zombie movie and rereading a few of the older books. Its 90% recycled Anita, Vampire Layer, garbage and 10% zombie movie.
