We received this humidifier at a baby shower. It worked well for over a year with occasional use. Yesterday while running it was knocked over and not noticed right away. Because the mechanism that shuts off the unit is a float, when upside down the float stays in the "ON" position. Without water flowing to it, after a short time the plastic started to melt around the interior of the unit. The plastic melting/ burning smell was terrible. I noticed the smell and unplugged it before it could get worse. From the heat, I'm sure it could have started a fire. I'm not sure why it doesn't have a tip switch like a space heater, or maybe it does, but it didn't activate. Either way, it could have been a disaster. Use it carefully!
