DO NOT Buy this radio!!!! VERY short longevity for mine. It was great when it worked...but...oh well
Shortly after the purchase of my PR-D9W, the"lock icon" came on made the radio non-functional. The radio wouldn't turn on so I had to pay to ship it back for repair though it was in warranty. I was aware of the little switch on the right side but that did nothing. The radio worked for a while when it came back from repair but now the problem is back. Of course, it is now out of warranty and the Lock icon is back on making the radio useless; it still won't even turn on. I tried every combination of different battery types and using the cord instead of batteries and I tried the little lock switch on the right side of the radio (again). No luck so this purchase certainly did not serve me well at all. A near total waste of money. I think it is destined for the recycle bin. I loved the radio when it worked, but it was a VERY short romance!! 11/4/18. I just HAD to update my initial review of this item and my horrific experiences with the Sangean radio. None of the above evaluation has changed...except it just got worse. So, with my useless radio, before pitching it, I sent an email to Sangean asking if they had any suggestions for how to get the "lock" function to "unlock" so I could use my radio. 2 weeks and I'm still waiting for at least a note in response to my email from Sangean. So, being persistent and very consumer oriented (and I hate like HELL to be ripped off) I called Sangean at their 800 number in California. To my utter amazement, I reached a gentleman who asked me to explain the problem. (I'm getting excited now because I got a real person who might be able to help!) So I explained and his response was, "it could be something with the mother-board". OH REALLY?!?! Ya' think??? He gave me 2 options. OPTION #1. I could pay $25 and ship the radio back to them (about $15 for me shipping it again if I remember correctly from the first time I did that while the radio was in warranty). The $25 would cover repairs and return shipping to me. Well, I'm no math major (though I do hold a double Master's degree in Education and Child Growth and Development so I'm no slouch) but I did the math. Let's see now; the radio cost me about $60. I already paid $15 for the first IN WARRANTY repair for shipping and now they want $25 to repair and return the radio to me plus I would spend another $15 for safe shipping to California. So the radio for which to this point I may have gotten about 6 months worth of use and it is out of warranty costs me an ADDITIONAL $40 if I elect to have it repaired again. I could buy a new radio for $5 more! "Such a deal." Needless to say, I blitzed their generous $25 repair offer. OPTION #2. Now again, I'm not a Rocket Scientist either but something smelled a little funny about this option. I was told to leave the radio "unplugged for 5 HOURS", nope...not 4, not 3 but 5 hours "and overnight would be better" and the problem may resolve. Well, since the sucker doesn't work worth a damn anyway, I splurged and took the overnight option. I'm not sure what I was thinking but I played along. Can someone at Sangean EXPLAIN to me why 5 hours of "unpluggedness" would make the least bit of difference to my radio, especially if it is the "motherboard" that has the problem? I expect that this guy and his cronies in the office all had a good laugh at my expense after I thanked him we parted "friends". Hey Fred, roll that keg over this way. I've got a live one on the phone. I'm old enough to remember a degree of product quality when I made a purchase (I'm 68), and I also remember a company wanting to make their customers happy when something goes amiss with a product, but this treatment and total lack of any concern at all just rubs me the totally wrong way and I certainly would never buy another product from Sangean. Technically, they don't OWE me anything, but I DO have a big mouth and when I feel I have been...eh em...SCREWED and this is one clear example of just that, I make it known. What do you say to THAT, Sangean??? Oh, yea...what am I thinking. I expect that no one at the company cares a whit about reviews once they have our dollars in hand. Silly me. I hope at least that this evaluation helps other potential Sagean customers. You won't see me shopping for ANYTHING they even touch. Want to step up to the plate, Sangean and play fair??????
