Fool me once, shame on you; fool me three times, shame on me.
I've now owned the whole range of Jaybird bluetooth headphones. I've had the Freedom (JF3), Sprint (JF4) and now the BlueBuds X. Also to note, I solely use my headphones for running/biking, I rarely, if ever, use them sitting at a desk, so this review is skewed towards a more active, sweaty individual.
I got to the BlueBuds after going through 3 pairs of Freedom's in about 6 months. Every time they crapped out over some sort of defect ("Motherboard fried" was one) and had to be sent back for warranty replacement. The kicker with warranty replacement is you have to pay for the shipping w/tracking, so about $45 out the door for something any customer service centric company would have taken care of. After feeling I paid my dues with the Freedoms, I upgraded to the Sprints ("Hey, must be a new model issue"). After about 3 weeks with the Sprints, same sort of issues started happening that were symptoms of the Freedoms dying (intermittent charging, wouldn't turn off, etc). Luckily I was still within my return window with Amazon and returned them (return shipping covered of course since Amazon is awesome).
Any sane-minded consumer would probably have decided to move on and switch brands, but for reasons I don't full understand I decided to give the Cadillac of bluetooth headphones a shot and picked up the BlueBuds X.
These headphones have really been a disappointment from the start and it all goes back to fitting. For the BluBuds X, Jaybird got rid of the over the ear clip in favor of draping the cord over your ear as a replacement. It just doesn't work. Both the JF3 and JF4 had the clip and in turn had superior fit. I have tried every combination of tips and ear cushions (over and under the ear) and can't get near the fit as the previous models. This in turn equates to mediocre sound and constant pushing-in while trying to run/bike. Another difference I have noticed between the BlueBuds and older models, is the shaft the the ear tips fit over is a larger diameter, thus providing less space for the ear tips to "wedge" when trying to get a secure fit in your ears. My hunch this is a big part of the problem as well. For what it's worth, I compared the shaft size to a pair of well fitting corded Sennheisers for comparison, and it is about double the size.
I'm giving them 2 stars because they haven't broken (yet, it's been about 2 months) and they do seem well built. I just feel overly frustrated with these headphones, considering the price and heavy marketing towards active lifestyle. I imagine a good portion of positive reviews here are from users that aren't using them for sports, etc.
If I were to do it again, I probably would have tried another pair of Sprints and hoped they lasted longer vs upgrading to the BlueBuds.
Hope this helps.
**UPDATE**
They broke. Three months into mediocre performance and they died, just like every other pair of Jaybird headphones I've owned. If I could review customer service, I'd give jaybird 4 stars because this time they at least gave me a prepaid label and were fairly apologetic (which leads me to believe this is happening fairly frequently) . But, this review is for the product and I'd give it 0 stars if I could.
