My Geospring hybrid water heater recently reported a heat pump failure and generated an error code called "hfc code f-c." Although GE will not tell you what this means, apparently it means failed compressor and mainly involves a failed part called the "evaporator asm." I think what happens is the coils in it leak, releasing the refrigerant inside. The heat pump cannot work without it. When this happens, it switches to "regular" resistant electric heat, which defeats the purpose of paying the extra expense and owning a hybrid water heater like the Geospring. I discovered this problem to be widely reported on the internet. I even found repair companies advertising hfc code f-c repair ... Google even autofilled it after I typed only "ge hybrid w," so clearly many people are having this problem. I've owned mine for about 2.5 years, but I think it lasted this long because our hot water use is relatively low. Others reported this problem in as little as a few months. BTW, evaporator coils last at least 10 years (the life expectancy of a Geospring), so there is no way this part should be failing so frequently and so quickly ... this is clearly GE's fault. I would not recommend buying the Geospring until GE comes clean and can assure the public that it has solved the problem on ALL Geospring models (I own the DNSRSA model) and is no longer using shoddy parts for manufacturing OR repair and extends full warranty coverage for all its customers that have this problem (and the other problems reported, such as power supply and main board). FOLLOW UP (2/6/13): My Geospring has been repaired. GE agreed to do the repair for no charge for parts and labor. GE is also reimbursing me for extra energy consumed due to the heat pump failure. I asked if the problem had been solved so that the same part would not fail again and I was told that it was because the evaporator has been redesigned. OTOH, when I asked the repairman what the real problem was, he said, "China" (a man of few words). We'll see how it works out, I'll let you know if it doesn't! I did not have problems arranging for the repair, though I'm sorry to hear that others have. Could be because I live in a metropolitan area that might have more readily available resources than others. If you own a Geospring with the dreaded infamous "hfc code f-c," please make sure GE gives you the same consideration I got: free repair with no charge for parts and labor, plus a check for energy reimbursement.
