Kindle Fan, Amazon Fan, but HDX experience not the best
I have two 32GB Kindle Fire HD's, one of which I bought as refurbished for a lower price than retail. Wanted the new HDX too - it was shiny and seemingly fabulous. Advertising promises "faster" and better display, and "mayday.", etc. HAD to have it! Got it about 40 days ago - had issues with it right away: No volume on device once any earbuds are removed and had to hard start it to get sound back (happened often). Videos which were deleted were still taking up storage on the device even though I couldn't actually access the deleted video any longer. Had to force stop apps and restart; device frozen/unresponsive. Had to do factory reset. Kept calling Mayday, which is a great concept except that when you have to power down to fix something Mayday disconnects. Problems with Wifi (would drop or show as only 1 bar while my Kindle Fire HD had full wifi bars and never drops). Videos slower to download than on my HD. I expected the HDX would be "better" based on the advertising; I think it would be if everything works as promised. Finally, when I had no volume again and it had crashed the night before, I called Amazon and requested a replacement. Today, received a REFURBISHED HDX to replace the 40-day old HDX. Not acceptable Amazon! I paid for a NEW HDX. Refurbished can be a good option when you pay the cost of a refurbished device. I am returning the replacement (the refurbished HDX) and am also returning the HDX I bought 40 days ago. Amazon originally stated because I am past the 30 days they would only refund 80% of HDX cost, not 100%. Guess I should not have been patient in trying to make the HDX work - should have returned it immediately. Amazon has agreed now to refund 100% once they receive the returned items. All of my frustration could be avoided if they would have sent me a NEW replacement, not refurbished (AND offered to do it before the 30 days expired when I was calling "Mayday" every few days). Not cool, Amazon! The lesson I learned: If your HDX doesn't work perfectly immediately, send it back, don't be patient. I also learned that Amazon customer service is not as terrific as I had once thought they were. Updated comment: When I finally received my refund, it wasn't the full amount expected. Amazon imposed a restocking fee. I had to call them, explain my situation again and request the restocking fee be refunded. I did end up ordering a new HDX and paid in full for it. It works great and I'm happy with it. However, note that when the first HDX was purchased, I bought it on an installment plan being offered at the time. Two weeks ago they charged me the second installment on the returned (first) HDX. I had to call Amazon, explain the situation again and they are "working on reversing" that installment. Guess we will see whether the third and fourth installments get charged in error too. One year later (3/2015): I've had the "re purchased" HDX about 1 year. It has been going strong and I'm very happy with the device. The software update in fall 2014 caused a few bugs in it, one being that my favorite app no longer works in this device (Words with Friends). Per Amazon (two months ago), they were going to have their developers look into it, but not yet altered and that app still crashes my updated operating system. Everything else works fine.
