Beware: This is a thinly disguised “friendship story” that slams the reader headlong into such graphic and disturbing prolonged scenes of violence that you are left reeling. I had to slam this book shut and remove it from my room where I was reading before bed because I knew it would give me nightmares. In an age when we are so frequently assaulted by grisly images and details of horror, the plague continues with this kind of book. Don’t be bamboozled by the cover image and warm fuzzy reviews. This is a truly awful book that will disturb your mind and spirit as the reader is plunged suddenly into vicariously experiencing the same traumas as the characters. Another reviewer here said it well. How scary that we have become so inured to this type of horrific material, that so many other reviewers didn’t even mention or seem affected by this. In a world that needs more light and hope, this kind of writing represents gratuitous promoting of the dark and tragic status quo.
