My daughter had size Small in a different brand last year, and although she hasn't grown much since then, we heeded the other reviews and ordered her Medium. These guards have a non-flexible front with a single-piece padded back. They seem well made and sturdy. However, not only were they too tight to fit around her legs, but the guards themselves were at least 2 inches shorter than the small-size guards from last year. So small, in fact, that at her first practice she got a huge bruise on the exposed shin above the guard. I'm attaching a photo. The shin guard on the left is last year's guard, different brand, size S ("for players 3' 11" - 4' 7"") and measures roughly 7" tall x 4.5" wide (at the narrowest point). On the right are the Messi 10 guards, size M, and measures roughly 5.5" tall x 3" wide. If you're planning to order these, definitely order at least two sizes larger than you'd expect.
