A Flawed and Unorganized Film That Will Be Free on Disney Plus in January
I watched this film when it came out on my birthday. I entered the movie theater with a decent level of optimism. When the film finished, I left with disappointment.
The "A plot" of the film takes place across a week. However, a good majority of the film's introductions for character backstories are done through flashbacks, most of which last for 10+ minutes long each. The film has a very bad habit of skipping time periods whenever it needs to introduce a new member of the Eternals. There are 10 members of the Eternals team in total, so this happens pretty frequently.
In addition, the pacing of the film was terribly handled as it dragged on and on until the final act. Once the final act hit, the pacing completely changed. A level of consistency or clearly defined levels of consistency for pacing is/are necessary for a good film.
As for the cast, I found them to be a mixed bag. I liked Kingo, Phastos, Gilgamesh, and Karun. I was indifferent about Makkari, Druig, Ajak, and Thena. I didn't like Sersi, Ikaris, Sprite, or Kro. In my opinion, I think the film would've been better if they halved the total number of Eternals that were focused on throughout the film. Having fewer Eternals to develop would allow for greater depth in the remaining Eternals (it kinda seems like Marvel is planning on doing this with Eternals 2).
I wouldn't say that it's the worst film that I've ever watched, but it's definitely one of the worst MCU films out there (it's the worst on my list below Hulk and Thor: Dark World) and one of the most boring films that I've ever watched. Bad films like "Plan 9 from Outer Space" are fun to watch because of how absurdly bad they are. This film is flawed and boring, which is the worst kind of bad a film can be.
I'll still grab it to complete my collection of physical MCU films (I like having complete movie collections so I can rip the movies for Plex [streaming services butcher visual and auditory fidelity]), but it's not a film that you should spend $30+ on willy nilly. Give it a watch on Disney+ first (comes out January 12th there) before determining whether you should spend on this film or not. You can save $30+ that way if you end up not liking the film.
Spider-Man: NWH, Shang-Chi, and Black Widow are MUCH better films to spend your money on IMO. Those three films are films that I enjoyed in the theaters. Those three films are also less expensive than the Eternals at the moment.
