Who was this written for?
We have a heroine who has been a big city family court lawyer but in this tale can't get the simplest things right. The process of making to do lists consumes much of her time, but is inexplicably agonising for her. A couple of unexpected events, indirectly impacting her, throw her into a vortex of tears, quivering, and dropping off to sleep, followed after a short time by more tears, quivering, and dropping off to sleep. She always is wrong. She holds a heavy ancient Spanish gold coin and concludes that it's only a plaything. She inherits a run-down old house, refuses more than a million for it, and nearly bankrupts herself patching it up because, well it's not at all clear. My favorite: for 3/4 of the entire novel she can't understand that the dreamy, god-like Adonis who is throwing himself at her is available, because she knows he once was wedded. That his marriage may have ended does not occur to her, despite the fact that her own marriage has ended, she has been a big city family court lawyer, and EVERYBODY READING THIS NONSENSE HAS FIGURED IT OUT AFTER A PARAGRAPH OR TWO. She solves nothing and is rescued repeatedly by nearly every other character in the novel. And for additional realism there are the ancient Spanish coins, a lost Spanish mission, a shockingly large bequest, and a trove of unknown brilliant paintings stacked in her backyard shack. And every man she meets makes her shiver at the thought of his touch. What is this crap? I've read and enjoyed cozy mysteries. And I read and did not enjoy this mess. If you ask nothing of a mystery but that it does not challenge your 6th grade reading level, this one is for you. But if you enjoy actual mysteries and have a modicum of self respect, do yourself a big favor and look elsewhere.
