★★☆☆☆
Case, heatsink and price come up considerably short.
I’ve ordered CanaKit’s Raspberry Pi 2 Ultimate Starter Kit in the past for myself and my students, and been quite happy with them. But CanaKit’s new Raspberry Pi 3 Ultimate Starter Kit leaves a few things to be desired which I hope they’ll be able to resolve, as this is otherwise a great way to jump in. 1) The position of the processor cutout is in the wrong place in the new clear case. You would need to use a file or jig saw to enlarge the cutout so that it is in the proper position. 2) The heatsink which was delivered is considerably smaller than what shipped with CanaKit’s older RPi2 Ultimate Kits, and is also smaller than the heatsink pictured in product shots. Given the higher power output of the Broadcom BCM2837 SoC, I notice that my processor runs considerably hotter during compute-intensive tasks, which is a bit worrisome. 3) CanaKit’s kit price is perhaps $15 higher than where it should be, adding up all the component prices. Perhaps this will change as the supply chain grows and demand goes down. We’ll see. I bought my kit despite the obvious price hike.
