Camera okay, but beware! App requires too many unnecessary permissions.
October 18, 2016:
For the price, this device and its apps are generally good. However, after about a few weeks of use, the Yi apps started to constantly bombard me with Yi's advertisements. At first, you can tolerate them, but eventually they become very ANNOYING. Also, the time zone can be set in the Apps but it does not display the correct time whenever the apps issues a notification. Another concern is that the device only has a wireless connection, which may be a security problem. I also have the Edeep and it has both wireless and wired options. With the wired option, you don't have to input your home router's password into the company's apps. In terms of moving the camera through the apps, though, the Edeep camera's apps (MIPC) is not as functional as the Yi's apps. I have found in both the Yi and the Edeep cameras that when you view the device on their apps there's a time delay with the video varying from 10 to 20 seconds. Perhaps, the time delay may be a condition with all IP cameras.
Question to Yi Technologies: Does Yi Technologies' IP cameras use components from XiongMai Technologies, components that contributed to the denial-of-service attacks to Dyn (an Internet infrastructure company) on October 21, 2016? (See an article on attack at [...])
UPDATE March 16, 2018:
On Android, the YI app requires too many permissions. The new update, which I by-pass by clicking "Later" every time the app open, now requires "Device ID & call information." Why? The apps has too many unnecessary access. It already requires the following permissions:
1) read phone status and identity
2) take pictures and videos
3) record audio
4) modify or delete the contents ot your USB storage
5) disable your screen lock
6) find accounts on device
7) change network connectivity
connect and disconnect from Wi-Fi
download files without notification
full network access
view network connections
view Wi-Fi connections
8) close other apps
retrieve running apps
9) control flashlight
control vibration
prevent phone from sleeping
Stay away. "Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!"
