Updated - And not good!
*** UPDATE November 26, 2017 ***
My Nighthawk AC1900 Desktop WiFi Range Extender has failed (for a second time). As I wrote in my last update, the low frequency band lost performance slowly over time, and then simply stopped working. Changing the settings and finally doing a factory reset makes no improvement. Clearly a device that can, at one moment, work perfectly in my system, then, without provocation, not work the next is not the fault of the user. Tech support will (once again) put me through the ringer in a vain attempt to prove that the placement of the extender, relative to my router, is the problem and I will (once again) prove them wrong. Or, I could stop the nonsense and throw this paperweight in my trash. Since I have no way of knowing if this common, I encourage you to read the other reviews. This has been a terrible experience for me.
*** UPDATE November 15, 2017 ***
Agonizing experience. The low frequency performance has all but stopped (5Ghz still appears unaffected). I check speedtest.net, and what was 25MBps a month ago is now sub-1MBps. I have attempted restarts and full-resets to factory condition and the condition does not improve. The fact that it degrades over time, is all the proof that I need to implicate the device. The prospect of dealing with Netgear tech support is just too much to bear. I will use it in Fastlane Mode on the 5 Ghz band until that fails, then it's going into the trash.
*** UPDATE October 10, 2017 ***
I was originally very happy with the range extender, but with nearly one year of experience on which to report, the news is not good. My original range extender began showing signs of degradation within a month or two, but it was hard to determine whether it was an environmental problem, a Comcast problem, or a hardware problem because my test results were hard to quantify. Often a simple reboot restored performance, so I reserved blame on the cause for several months.
Then, I noticed that the hi-frequency (5Ghz) band just stopped working altogether and the speed on the low band dropped off like a rock. I am 75' LOS to the R7000 router, so signal was not the problem. Since you get a measly 90 days of phone support, I requested a replacement under the 1-year hardware warranty, and this is when it got weird... I was told that I needed to have phone support diagnose the problem, but phone support refused to take my call. Even after explaining that I had been referred, I still got the runaround (LOUD ALARMS SOUNDING!!!!). It took an unambiguous tone and a few carefully chosen words to trigger the warranty replacement, and this was received about two weeks ago. When I plugged that unit in, everything seemed to be in perfect order. Setup was straightforward, and performance was as expected. The extender was delivering 40Mbps at the 2.7Mhz band! I was relieved! Then, this morning after a week away, my performance is down 10x on BOTH bands! I've reset the router and extender... TWICE, and the results are the same. So, what has changed? Is this an aging issue? The R7000 router continues to function perfectly in the main house and I have zero complaints about it's performance, but this EX7000 range extender is just full of unpleasant surprises. If this continues to fail, I will post an update. For now, I cannot recommend this product.
