TOXIC to our dog!
One of the reasons we purchased this cooling pad was because of the "non-toxic" materials inside. There is always a risk that our dog will chew and consume anything available to her. After a month or so of use, our Amy finally chewed through the corner and ingested some of the contents (about as much as a half-sheet of paper). She vomited most of it up early in the day and seemed OK. A few hours later, however, she began having what we later learned was a severe neurological reaction to the product. (Signs include shaking, lack of balance, facial tremors, sniffing around feet and licking paws.)
We rushed her to an emergency veterinary hospital where we were ultimately advised to call Animal Poison Control. During our call, we learned that Amy isn't the only dog that has reacted to this product in this way. After our vet spoke directly with Animal Poison Control, he told us that there was a study in which most dogs reacted completely fine to the product. However, he said there was a small percentage who had severe neurological symptoms like Amy.
Amy stayed at the hospital with an I.V. and constant monitoring for about 24 hours and then we were able to pick her up. She still had some minor symptoms and it took her a few days to get her balance back. She is now back to her "normal"/crazy self, and we are so thankful!
I sent The Green Pet Shop an email a week ago to share my experience and wish for them to either share my story or at least publish a warning somewhere. I have not heard a response in seven days, so I made the decision to start publishing my own warnings.
Animal Poison Control called me back a few days ago to follow-up on Amy. As of 7/22, she is one of four cases related to toxicity from this cooling pet pad. They are investigating the issue, as the listed contents in the bed really should not be toxic. This makes you wonder if there are ingredients not listed...
Moral of the story is, don't take any company's word when they claim it's "non-toxic". And please don't purchase this bed!
