Should have used as tinder before carrying on 55 mile hike
Maybe if I read this as a teenager, the ramblings would have seemed hip, cool, enlightened...I am smarter than my parents. As a mid-30's, the writing was awful. The characters annoying. The plot line non-existent. Other than reinforcing my knowledge that America wasn't THAT great post-World War II with poverty, family issues, drug issues, etc...this book was just...awful. Maybe I am just not that smart enough to 'get it.'
After getting to page 180 (of 250), I returned this book to where it came from - the trash, but unfortunately, not after I had carried it on a 55 mile hike on Isle Royale as my camp book (I had chosen it after a quick google of great books of the 20th century). I wish I had saved myself the 1 pound of weight. Awful.
If you are not digging it after the first 20 pages...cut sling load and put it down...it doesn't change or get any better.
