This was a hard read.
The characters lack dimension. We know nothing about the little girl, who is supposedly the center of Adah's world. The Branches keep repeating the same boorish, bad grammar to prove how raw and rotten they are. Jack, who I guess was supposed to be Adah's quiet hero, felt more like he was plotting to turn Adah into a human skin suit. It wasn't even until 53% of the way through the book when Jack threw out his first creepy compliment that we found out Adah had brown hair. Oversized house dresses, overalls, and bad grammar do little to describe characters, impart the reader with clarity of motive, or make them endearing features in the story.
Speaking of those creepy compliments, the dialog between characters was labored and painful to read. Descriptions of character interactions were painfully redundant within the same scene, let alone every blessed time these characters interacted with each other. My anxiety level reached an all time high waiting for these characters to get to the point and take action. The romantic interludes between Jack and Adah were uncomfortable, Adah's secret desires to lick fluids off Jack, and his ominus promise to "sop her up like a biscuit" isn't sexy or enticing.
The author did a thorough job researching her story. So thorough, in fact, that she copied wikipedia's entry for the Colt Model 1903 Pocket Hammer pistol word for word "Bonnie Parker used one to break Clyde Barrow out of jail...John Dillinger was carrying this model of pistol when he was shot by FBI agents." Other than that plagerism the author did a poor job giving a sense of what time frame in which the story took place. The Branch's witlesness and mention of house dresses did nothing for setting the time period and I had to return to the beginning of the book to see if the year was mentioned.
