NOT eco friendly!!! Don't get these!!
Do not buy these!!! They break down, yes, but into minuscule pieces of plastic that irrevocably litter the earth. The additive they use to make it break apart is actually HEAVY METALS. And even if it weren't, it's an additive. This is not the same process that a natural material undergoes to break apart. Teeny tiny bits of plastic are not the same as natural food for microbes. I've corresponded with BPI, the company that certifies compostable products, and they agree with me on this!
After researching these bags and the additive in them, I reported my findings to ReUseIt. I'm very sorry to see that they are still carrying these! :( My esteem of this cooperative business is going down the longer I see them peddling this "greenwashed" product. Don't buy these! Better to buy bags made from recycled plastic! Or even, quite frankly, plain old plastic bags!
In general, forget "biodegradable." It used to mean something, but the term has been co-opted by big business, and "Biodegradable" is a meaningless term these days, that just means it breaks into small pieces "eventually." An ordinary plastic bag, or plastic toy is now allowed to be called "biodegradable." I'm not kidding. The term is meaningless! The only term that means anything in terms of eco friendly products, is "compostable!" Here's an excellent, concise video explaining the difference between biodegradable and compostable.
