Two weeks ago, I opened a new bottle and promptly gave my 3-year-old 5ml. Four hours later his tummy was cramping, he became extremely ill, lethargic with projectile vomiting. He then suffered a seizure, stopped breathing and became unresponsive. My husband did CPR until paramedics came. We have run every test (blood, xrays, ultrasounds, EEG, MRI...) and every test has come back normal. My son is not allergic to black elderberry because I’ve given it to him many times in the past. No one around him had the flu. After process of elimination, the only thing left was the elderberry I gave him that morning. He was the only one who had it. The only one who got sick. We spoke to head of toxicology at CHLA, who agreed elderberry most likely was the cause. The plant is highly toxic and if not heated to a certain temperature can make people very sick. Also, these products are not regulated so there’s always the chance something else was in the bottle. Currently there is an open investigation with the FDA on this product. I’m hoping it was one bad small batch and no one else gets sick. Also important to note, the bottle has not yet been tested. We are waiting for it to be picked up from our house. This was just our experience after my son consumed a dose from a new bottle.
