★★☆☆☆
Cool design, good heat, but poor quality control, unreliable thermostat control
I bought 2 of these heaters for our kids' bedrooms, intending for it to keep their rooms warm at night. Thus, "silent" operation was the key word I depended on for me to be happy with the units. I was excited to try them out and I have to say that the heaters worked nicely to heat each of their insulated 120 sq ft rooms.
Also neither of them smelled bad on high setting so that was a relief as some of the reviews indicated that it might be something I should monitor.
However the occasional and startling snapping and crackling sounds when set both on high and on thermostat control gave me a reality check. On thermostat control, as the rooms reach target temperature, the units shuts off, which initiates a cooling cycle. As the different materials contract from cooling, it results in the units crackling and snapping, sometimes loudly. The same happens when it heats up again, as the various materials expand. This sound has awakened my 5 year old son, startled and crying from the noise. I figured this was a defective unit so I returned and got a replacement, but the replacement unit did the same thing!
The unit in my daughter's room did not make as loud snapping and crackling sounds, more like low clicking sounds, but it still made noise...I figured it is tolerable as they did not wake her. It also worked well to heat her room but this unit was also defective. On 2 separate occasions, when set to 72 degrees on thermostat control, her room heated up to 85 degrees before we turned it off, for fear of overheating. We were lucky to find this out because we monitored her room with 2 temperature sensors that we checked remotely. We considered this unit unsafe to use so we stopped using it.
I was hoping that the snapping and crackling sounds from my son's unit would subside given some time, to let the new materials work themselves out, but after a full month of almost daily use, the unit still makes these surprisingly loud sounds. This was a deal breaker for me.
We ended up returning both units. I really wanted them to work for us as I liked the design, the controls, the portability from rolling wheels...there's a lot to like about this heater, but the markedly Loud "silent" operation and unreliable thermostat control forced us to return both units. Now our kids' rooms fall to the low 60's at night, but at least they are not awakened startled or soaking in sweat because the room is too hot.
This product needs better quality control. As of now I would not trust my kids' well-being and safety to it.
The above issues made me want to give the product one star, as I felt like the "silent" operation claim was false advertisement. But I added one more star because I liked the heat it generated. If your situation does not prioritize "silent" operation, perhaps it is better suited for you. But do watch out for the questionable reliability of the unit's thermostat control!
So that makes 2 for 2 failures in our experience. I was surprised to give it this rating as the average rating from other Amazon users were generally good. Our search for an appropriate room heater continues. You can judge for yourself if it is worth the risk for you to try it out for your situation.
