★☆☆☆☆
Disappointing
I really wanted to like this book; there aren't many novels that feature realistic characters living on the spectrum, whether with profound Autism, the much higher-functioning Asperger's Syndrome, or somewhere in between.
In this case, it is especially unfortunate that the author failed to educate himself on the subject before creating a character that he depicts as severely Autistic, yet claims to have Asperger's.
There is a great deal of difference between the two, and this should be apparent to even the most casual researcher.
I am a married, mother of four (including an Autistic high-functioning son) who drives, has run a successful business, and functions in society while living with Asperger's, and I'll tell you, I am offended by Bernt's gross misconceptions of people like myself and my son, and I worry about the grievous harm done every time another uninformed reader takes his words as truth.
Bottom line, no matter how good the plot, I cannot get through a book with such a glaring and serious error.
