Typical Modern Hollywood: Wokeness Above All Else
(Edited after episode 7)
I have an idea, I call it "How to intentionally and permanently kill the only chance at film a legendary book series will ever get."
First, let's take a beloved story and world which already has a healthy diversity of characters and duality of men and women, then make all but 3 characters a different shade of brown. No logic, no reasonable explanation (a town so isolated it only gets visitors a couple times a year... for a thousand years... somehow has perfect versions of every race in OUR world, including aboriginal Australians?) doesn't matter just make them brown! Then let's completely betray and alienate the core fanbase (using GLARING inaccuracies and character assassination), leaving only outsiders as a potential audience. Then, let's turn away outsiders with spotty, rushed plots, and skip character development altogether, leaving the unaware viewer completely perplexed. Throw in a bunch of cringy forced "YAAAAS SLAAY KWEEEN" gurlpower moments (again, unnecessary as there were plenty in the books), and spend an entire episode on characters who don't exist and don't matter, with a bunch of time spent establishing the fact that everyone in the world is just a little gay. ABOVE ALL: spend a bunch of time on things we DON'T need to see, and completely omit things we DO need to see. This will ensure the content is mediocre and unrelatable to anyone.
With the core fan base demoralized and alienated, and with the hopes of attracting new fans completely destroyed with TERRIBLE writing, the shekels will stop flowing in and the show will get shut down. A PR team will make sure all explanations of the shutdown revolve around the boogieman of "incel trolls reviewbombing" and not acknowledge the arrogance and soullessness of the writing and production team.
Seriously, as a fan of the books, there aren't very many ways this show could get worse for me. Wild and unnecessary deviations from the plot, characters who are unrelatable, bad acting due to cast of diversity plugs, ridiculously long and unnecessary additions (the whole funeral episode... just wow).
When I was a kid, I stopped reading Game of Thrones after book 1 just because I saw through the writing and into the mind of the author, and realized I didn't really care to read disgusting twisted things from a disgusting twisted mind. I can see that same projection in the writing of this show. Every moment of the show is dripping with the evidence of a writers meeting where some unhinged maniac feminist, appointed to a position of power she did nothing to earn, commands the staff to omit or include things.
"but in the books, the dragon is a man, that's like the entire central theme of the series"
"DOESNT MATTER, NOT INCLUSIVE ENOUGH, GIRLS HAVE TO BE DRAGONS TOO"
"so in the books the warders are super stern and emotionally resilient, battle hardened warriors"
"THATS TOXIC MASCULINITY, MAKE THEM CRY AND ALSO BE GAY"
"so Rand is the main character of this story"
"MARGINALIZED UNDERREPRESENTED BLA BLA BLA MAKE IT ALL ABOUT MOIRANE"
"so Egwene starts out really timid and girly"
"DOESN'T MATTER STRONK WAMEN ONLY, MAKE HER A SUICIDAL BERZERKER"
And so on and so forth. Seriously it's not as if the writing team didn't bother to read the books, but more as if they read the books and hated them so they decided to butcher the story out of anger and spite. And even if this wasn't an adaptation of a story that was already well written, the writing is STILL horrible for a new story. Zero character exposition or worldbuilding, plot holes the size of Jupiter, illogical dialogue exchange, unrelatable and poorly timed emotional moments... etc. If they had spent less time forcing their narrative, and more time on character and world development, it would be improved tenfold even with the brownwashed cast and bad acting.
I'm going to continue watching for the tiny shreds of hope I have based on some of the better aspects of the show (fight scenes are great, set design is pretty, locations are beautiful, and despite shortcomings its still based on a story I love), but those hopes are incredibly small. I'm more watching out of morbid curiosity to see how bad it gets, kinda like a car crash. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if they just completely changed the story and made Nynaeve the dragon, or made the dragon some combination of Rand and the girls, or instead of Rand having three women they will change it to "lol it takes three women to keep this bumbling problematic male in line."
I hate what they did to this and, as a sign of the times, this is utterly demoralizing.
