much worse than Gen 1 Fire TV
This is the 4th Fire TV I have purchased and what a disappointment this 2015 Fire TV is. I use Fire TV for a few main reasons: 1. Plex 2. Netflix 3. Prime videos Right now, Dolby Digital AC3 is not supported on this 2015 model whereas the older model work perfectly fine. This results in everything getting downgraded to 2.0 and Plex will not stream properly without disabling DD. It took me about an hour of research to narrow down to this issue and solution. Also when I purchased this 2015 Fire TV, the remote is just as good quality as the original gen 1 Fire TV. It has a matte coating with slick buttons that are easy to press. However, due to a bug of the Bluetooth chip in the remote, it was intermittently cutting out and being disconnected to the Fire TV on its own accord. This prompted an RMA of the Fire TV remote with Amazon and triggered over a month of unpleasant dealings with Amazon. 1. Customer service sent me a replacement remote that is "refurbished" and is now made of a very cheap grade plastic with no coating and the buttons are now rubber which has a bit of a bounce, thus not as responsive. 2. The 2nd try with customer service after complaining this remote not being a direct replacement, the CS placed an order of another remote for me but this time, they sent me a gen 1 remote which doesnt work with gen 2 Fire TV. (the shorter remote) 3. The 3rd try, customer service promised me a remote that would be just like the one that came with my 2015 when I bought it new. After waiting a week to receive it, it is still the same cheap plastic no-coating, rubber button remote they sent me the first try. 4. After this, i called customer service again, got hung up on, complained after another call. The 2nd customer service agent apologized but said there is no other remotes they can offer me, this cheap one is it. Here are the problems with the cheap inferior remote: a. it is more slippery than the one with a matte coating. The lack of this coating makes the remote feel cheap and unsubstaintial. One of the main reason why I bought the FireTV over Nexus player from Google is due to the remote quality. Now Amazon has taken that away with this refurbished replacement that I think is meant for the Fire TV Stick with Voice Remote. b. Due to the lack of the rubberized/matte coating on the remote, the battery compartment door on the back is very hard to open now as it is a sliding action cover that needs to be pressed down. It took me more than 5 minutes to open that cover without trying to use something sharp to pry it open. c. the 6 buttons are now made of rubber so due to the bounciness of the material, it creates a slight unprecise feeling when clicking on them. This is the reason why your typical keyboard and mouse buttons are hard plastic instead of rubber... End of the day, I am more than disappointed in Amazon, its Fire TV customer service department that is in India, and the whole mess with the remote design downgrading and not being clear with the naming of it to match the proper Fire TV....etc So if you have a working 2015 Fire TV remote, count your blessings and hold on to your dearly with your life. If you dont have a proper working remote, be prepare to be disappointed with the inferior replacement!
