Don't waste your time reading this. Instead read some Sonia Johnson or Dworkin.
The audacity. I couldn't even finish reading this book because it pained me as an actual female to be subjugated to this person's take on being female, when in material reality, they are not. This sentence from a review on Newrepublic.com sums it up: " "Femaleness is not an anatomical or genetic characteristic of an organism, but rather a universal existential condition." For Chu, "femaleness" is the urge to be a vessel for another's desire." Women are not just holes to be filled with the things men or other women want. This is grossly misogynistic, and yet is anticipated as some revolutionary "medicine," when in reality, it is regurgitating the same sexist rhetoric that has always existed. The only difference is the claim to femaleness. A second excerpt. just to prove the point: " But my transition didn't feel like coming out. It felt like just choosing to do something else. It's not like coming out of the closet. It was just like walking from one room in your house to a different one, or maybe like moving into a new apartment. " Pretty much relating the existence of being female as "choosing" to wear a different outfit, when women, as a oppressed class, cannot just opt of that oppression by "choosing" to do so.
