I have long assumed Oxbow hay is the best hay in the market, and I hope I am wrong. I have been using this hay for about 5-6 months and it's been off and on in quality. This last bag was a disaster, and I think it killed my guinea pig. When I first opened the bag I noticed that my allergies started acting up extremely badly. Never in my previous bags was this a problem, and my sisters both complained that they were sneezing as well. Neither are prone to allergies. Not long after feeding this hay to my three guinea pigs, one of them passed away from unknown causes and another started itching inexplicably. I never thought it was related, but I took the two others to the vet after the other passed and the vet said they might have mites. Thought maybe it was something in the cage, so I cleaned it out. I moved the cage to the dining room/living room for unrelated reasons. Not long after that, both my sister (roommate) and I started itching and she started complaining about bites all on one side of her body. She was sleeping on the couch on her right side, all the bites were on the left. I opened the hay today and forgot to close the bag, and minutes later we noticed a lot of unidentified FLYING INSECTS in the air. I am 99% convinced that the itching to myself, my sister and the guinea pigs was due to those insects, and 80% my guinea pig passed away because of the hay. She had long fur that would have been easy for bugs to get into. I am devasted by her passing and infuriated that a brand I thought could be trusted has harmed us all this way. To top it off, the hay was mostly sticks and it wasn't worth the money since most of what they have eaten has to be constantly refilled. I am begging this company to be choicier with what they put into their bags. Please use caution and inspect your hay before you feed it to your friends.
