Looks like Narnia, smells like Narnia, but definitely isn't Narnia
Looks like Narnia, smells like Narnia, but definitely not Narnia. This is a poor adaptation of Lewis' work. Anyone who loves the world of Narnia will be disappointed to find favorite quotes changed, and all symbolism weakened or removed. This is presumably to make reading easier for a younger audience, however its clear the adapting author either didn't understand Lewis' work, or actually disliked it and therefore changed the intent of the book. For instance, the quote referring to Aslan "He's not safe, but he's good" has been changed to Lucy thinking to herself that looking at Aslan was "like looking at the sun, only safer." In this work, Aslan *is* a tame lion, apparently. Another key area for avid Narnia readers is the forgiveness of Edmund. In this book, Lucy sees him come back into camp "as if he was beginning to trust himself again." His treachery and jealousy of his siblings was completely downplayed, and therefore Aslan's forgiveness and sacrifice in saving him is symbolically weakened to the point of being useless. I gave this book got two stars rather than one because of the beautiful illustrations. I considered keeping it for that reason, and simply retelling the story in my own words (or rather Lewis') on the fly, but I think we will simply wait to read it when my son gets old enough for the real thing.
