Not Understanding the Hype Here !
I pre-ordered this book and waited a month and half for it. What an utter disappointment this book truly was. I found it poorly written and rife with stereotypes. The characters were never fully fleshed and seemed like sketches. I never truly felt as if I knew Lydia - the main character who has to flee Acapulco with her son after a ruthless cartel murders her family. The trek from Acapulco to the US/Mexico border doesn't quite ring true either. The peppering of high school Spanish throughout was also a flimsy attempt at authenticity. That was exactly the problem. This novel didn't feel real or authentic.
On the cover it says "A Grapes of Wrath for our Times" - Don Winslow. That could not be further from the truth !! Do other authors actually get paid to write glowing blurbs for books that are not worthy, like this one ?
